Sergey Loginov was born in 1962. He graduated from Shtiglits St. Petersburg Academy of Art and Design in 1992. The artist lives and works in St. Petersburg. His works can be found in galleries and private collections.

The artist uses an unusual technique, scratching images on plastic and finishing them off with oil. The mirror-like surface of modern plastic shows deep chisel marks with rubbed-in paint.

The artist uses white oil paint to convey the moonlight shining on the faces of the mysterious characters, creating the impression that time stands still.

It is easy to notice here that modern materials have started to gain a foothold in fine arts. Throughout the history of painting there has been a strong trend towards conservatism, with painters traditionally creating their works on canvas, paper or cardboard for hundreds of years. While new styles and trends appeared, paint continued to be dabbed on paper or canvas. Even though the character of brushstrokes changed as classicism gave way to impressionism and primitivism, the brushstrokes themselves were still laid on paper. On the one hand, it allowed to continue the traditions, but on the other hand created certain restrictions.

Lately a number of brand new modern materials have been developed, including polystyrol, komatex and different kinds of plastics. These are surfaces painters could not even dream of 50 years ago. Compared to paper or canvas, those are almost everlasting materials. As classics put it, a painting is the battle between the painter and the material. This means that the entire modern art is a battle on material which is 2000 years old. The texture of canvass is an inseparable part of the weaving process, the texture of paper is cellulose fiber. The nap of canvas may be shorter, yet it is still there. Yet modern materials are utterly devoid of this imperfection of the outdated technological process. Thus modern art is beginning to embrace what civilization excelled at most – state-of-the art materials, surpassing paper and canvas in both durability and strength many times over. The works by Sergey Loginov create the impression of razor cuts on a perfectly smooth plastic sheet. This unique trademark technique best conveys the inner world of the characters frozen on the mirror-like surface.
